Neoliberalism and equity: Chilean society analyzed from the students perspective

Abstract

This article explores the concepts “neoliberalism” and “equity” as defined by the students of the University of Chile. The qualitative study facilitated access to the construction of concepts and definition processes of the individuals using the natural semantic network technique. The sample included a total of 70 students. In conclusion they consider neoliberalism an economic system, which based on capitalism, is characterized by inequality, competition, injustice and individualism and its effects become evident in poverty. Whereas equity is a right based on distribution, characterized by equality, opportunities and justice focused on society and becomes evident in development.

PhD in comparative policies on social well being from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL). Research professor at the Institute of Ibero-American Studies of the Busan University of Foreign Studies in South Korea. Founder and editorial coordinator of the International Journal of Latin American Studies from 2010 to 2013. Research subjects: social capital and education, quality of basic and higher education, bias in educative actors.
